Travelling with a handicap

As a wheelchair user, you won't feel that you have been sidelined. You are welcome onboard the Glacier Express. We'd like to make your travel preparations as pleasant as possible for you. So sit back, and relax. Below, you'll find all the information you need for a pleasant and stress-free trip.

There is a wheelchair compartment and a toilet suitable for use by disabled persons in the 1st class section of every Glacier Express train. Important: Seat reservations in the Glacier Express are mandatory for wheelchair users and their accompanying person. Be sure to specifically request seat number 11 when making your reservation at a railway station ticket counter or travel agency; please do this no later than 24 hours before the trip.

    • If the disabled guest cannot leave his/her wheelchair during the journey, the seat reservation must be made through Glacier Express Central Reservations (Tel.+41 (0)81 288 65 65 or via infoglacierexpress.ch ).
    • Disabled passengers who are not confined to their wheelchairs during the journey, however, can reserve their seats using the normal Seat reservation service.

Well worth knowing: Our attentive train personnel will be pleased to assist you board the train. Please simply wait on the platform beside the mobile lift 10 minutes before the train's departure time.

Tickets: Travellers with a disability are required to show an identification card (accompanying person's card for Swiss citizens). Persons resident in Switzerland who are dependent on an accompanying person are entitled to free travel for the assisting person and/or a guide dog for the blind. A single ticket will be sufficient for all. Important: The accompanying person must be able to assist you during the entirety of the journey. Disabled and accompanying persons who are not resident in Switzerland are not eligible for a discount.

Further important information: Wheelchair users and the accompanying person pay the cost for a 2nd class ticket and travel in the 1st class. The seat reservation charge for the wheelchair user and accompanying person is between CHF 29.00 and CHF 49.00 each. Maximum dimensions and weights exist for the transportation of wheelchairs: width 70 cm, length 120 cm, weight 250 kg (weight capacity of mobile lifts. Boarding and disembarkation assistance for larger and/or heavier wheelchairs is generally not possible). All wheelchairs must be reported to the Call Center Handicap.

Have all your questions been answered? If not, you can obtain further information from the SBB's Handicap Call Centre. Open daily from 06:00 to 22:00 hrs
